Miles Brewton House Window Repair School
Charleston, SC: 1988
One of the best preserved examples of late-Georgian architecture in Charleston, the Miles Brewton House has remained in the same for more than 200 years. Equally extraordinary was the client who allowed the conservators to train local craftsman, starting them out with repair of the 40-odd window sash, before proceeding onto work on the exterior woodwork, masonry and ironwork. This prototype window repair training shop brought the cost of windows down to about $700 a piece. The most unusual oval window in the pediment was in desperate shape. Its restoration was challenging as the original craftsman had incorporated some unique construction details.
